Most people arrive at this decision having already decided they want pavers rather than a poured slab. The next question is which kind, and it is where the price range suddenly widens enormously, because "pavers" covers a manufactured concrete unit, a fired clay brick, a quarried travertine tile and an irregular natural flagstone, and those are four genuinely different products.
We install concrete pavers, so read this knowing where we stand. But three of these four materials are ones we would recommend under the right circumstances, and saying so is more useful to you than pretending otherwise.
Concrete pavers
A manufactured unit, pressed and cured under controlled conditions, made to a published standard. That standard, ASTM C936, requires an average compressive strength of 8, 000 psi, water absorption no greater than 5%, and dimensional tolerances of about 1.6 mm on length and width.
Those tolerances are the underrated part. A machine-made unit is consistent enough that a large field closes up tightly and lays predictably, which keeps labour down and makes patterns like herringbone practical at scale. Natural materials vary by nature, and that variation is paid for in installation time.
Strengths: lowest cost of the four, highest compressive strength, widest range of colours and formats, and individual units are replaceable from a stocked batch years later. Available from Belgard, Angelus Block, Acker-Stone and Orco locally, which means supply is rarely a scheduling problem.
The real weakness: it is a manufactured product imitating stone, and on close inspection it looks like one. Thru-mix units also dull with wear as the structural aggregate begins to show at the face, a face-mix unit avoids that, and the difference is invisible in a showroom, so it has to be asked about.
Clay brick
Fired clay, and the oldest paving material on this list by a wide margin.
Its defining property is colour permanence, and it is a genuine technical advantage rather than a marketing one. The colour of a clay brick is the fired clay itself, not a pigment added to a mix. It does not fade, because there is nothing in it to fade. A brick surface at forty years old looks like a brick surface at four, just with more character.
Strengths: permanent colour, a traditional look nothing else quite replicates, and it ages gracefully rather than merely wearing.
Weaknesses: a much narrower range of colours and sizes. You get the palette clay comes in, which is reds, browns and buffs. It costs more than concrete pavers. And clay pavers are generally more brittle than concrete units, so edges chip more readily under impact.
Where we would choose it: a period property where the architecture calls for it. On a 1920s Craftsman in Pasadena, brick can be the correct answer in a way that no concrete unit imitating brick will be.
Travertine
A quarried natural stone, and the one material on this list with a real, physical advantage over concrete pavers in a specific application.
Travertine is naturally light in colour and porous, and both properties reduce how hot it gets in direct sun. On a pool deck in an inland city, Woodland Hills, Encino, Tarzana. That is not a small thing. It is the difference between a deck that is usable at three in the afternoon in August and one that is not. We will say plainly that if barefoot comfort on a pool deck is your first priority and budget is not the binding constraint, travertine has a case that concrete pavers cannot fully answer.
Strengths: cooler underfoot, and a genuine natural stone appearance with variation no manufactured unit reproduces.
Weaknesses: considerably more expensive. Softer and more porous than concrete, so it stains more readily and needs sealing on a shorter cycle. It etches on contact with acids, spilled wine, citrus, some cleaning products. And it is more sensitive to salt, which matters if you have a saltwater pool, because salt crystallising inside a porous stone causes surface pitting over years.
The honest summary: travertine buys you a cooler, more beautiful surface and costs you money, maintenance and durability. For a pool deck that trade is often worth it. For a driveway it is not, travertine under vehicle traffic is the wrong application for the material.
Natural flagstone and cut stone
Irregular quarried stone, either laid in its natural shapes or cut into regular formats.
Strengths: nothing else looks like it, because every piece is genuinely unique. On a rustic or hillside property it can look inevitable in a way a laid pattern never does.
Weaknesses: it is the most expensive option on this list once installed, and much of that cost is labour rather than material. Irregular pieces have to be fitted individually and variable thickness means the setting bed is adjusted piece by piece. Joints are wider and less consistent, so the surface interlocks less effectively, which matters under vehicle loads. Some stones are also softer than others, and the soft ones do not belong on a driveway.
Where we would choose it: a garden path, a patio on a hillside property in La CaƱada Flintridge or Calabasas where the surroundings are already informal. Rarely a driveway.

- Lowest installed cost: concrete pavers, clearly.
- Highest compressive strength: concrete pavers, at an 8,000 psi average requirement.
- Colour that never fades: clay brick, because the colour is fired clay rather than pigment.
- Coolest underfoot: travertine, meaningfully.
- Most beautiful, most expensive: natural stone.
- Easiest to repair invisibly: concrete pavers. Stock a spare batch and a damaged unit is swapped rather than patched.
- Widest colour and format range: concrete pavers, not close.
- Best for a driveway: concrete pavers. Strength, interlock consistency and repairability all point the same way, and the two natural options are poorly suited to vehicle loads.
What we would actually tell you in your yard
For a driveway, concrete pavers, and it is not a close call. Vehicle loads reward high compressive strength and tight, consistent interlock, and both natural options give up ground on exactly those properties while costing more.
For a patio, concrete pavers for most yards, on cost and range. Brick if the house is period and the architecture asks for it.
For a pool deck, concrete pavers in a light colour will serve most people well and cost far less. If barefoot comfort is your top priority and the budget is there, travertine is genuinely better at that one job and we would not argue with you about it.
One thing that applies whatever you choose, and it matters more than the choice itself: the base underneath. A driveway gets a deeper base than a patio because it carries vehicle loads, and beyond that the right depth depends on your soil, your grade and your access, which is why we will not put a number on it here. The most expensive material in the world on an inadequate base will fail before a modest one on a proper base. If you take a single decision seriously, take that one.
