A slab cannot flex. That is the whole problem.
Southern California does two things to a poured concrete surface at once. Large heat swings expand and contract it, and the ground moves underneath, seismically, and seasonally where the soil is expansive clay. Concrete is rigid, so it responds the only way it can, which is by cracking. Most residential slabs here show meaningful cracking within five to ten years.
An interlocking paver surface is built to do the opposite. The units are separate, the joints flex, and the base beneath can be corrected in place. When something goes wrong you lift that area and reset it, rather than choosing between a patch that never matches and demolishing the whole thing.
Pavers cost more on day one. That is real, and if you are selling shortly a slab is the right call. We will tell you so.
ASTM C936 requires an 8,000 psi average. A residential concrete driveway slab is typically specified at 3,000–4,000 psi.
ASTM C936 dimensional tolerance. It is why a machine-made paver field closes up tight and lays predictably, where natural stone varies by its nature.
Against five to ten years before meaningful cracking on a typical poured slab in this climate.
